Welcome to Woodhurst
Colourful floral display at the east end of the village of Woodhurst, Huntingdonshire
Wodehyrst, Wodehirst (13th century) and Woodhurst
(Modern).
Woodhurst is a fine example of a Saxon Ring Village that has
changed little in size over many hundreds of years although the
buildings around and within the ring have been redeveloped many
times since the village was founded prior to the 11th century.
Woodhurst lies on the country road between
Oldhurst and
Bluntisham
which traverses north west and south east along a ridge of
relatively high ground.
The name Woodhurst is worthy of some thought as it is rather odd
meaning "wood wood" as "hurst" is the old English word for, you've
guessed it, "wood". It makes sense when used in a name like "Hazel
Hurst", i.e. "Hazel Wood" but in this context it appears to be used
to differentiate it from the village of "Oldhurst"
just down the road. Strange thing is there is very little, if any,
woodland around either village today.
Woodhurst is one of the parishes of the District of
Huntingdonshire, whose administrative centre is
Huntingdon, the other principle towns being
St Ives
home of the Chapel on the Bridge,
St Neots
the largest town in the County of Cambridgeshire, the Roman town of
Godmanchester and
Ramsey
site of the former Abbey.
